CranioSacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a light-touch bodywork therapy that can dramatically improve your health. It is gentle work that restores balance to the central nervous system. This is effective because the central nervous system controls all body functions. Restoring balance enables the body to self-correct, which can decrease tension and dysfunction in any body system thereby decreasing pain. The body then functions more efficiently and holistically.

The craniosacral system is part of the nervous system. It is made up of the soft tissues and fluid that protect your brain and spinal cord, as well as the connective tissue that surrounds the body’s organs. When we experience the stresses and strains of life, our body absorbs them but there is only so much it can handle before the tissues become tight and tense, affecting the circulation, the nervous system and organ function. Pain sets in. Yet the body has an innate ability to heal itself; this is what craniosacral therapy works with.

Craniosacral therapy is effective for helping conditions such as:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Sciatica
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • TMJ syndrome
  • Pain after dentistry
  • Pain after surgery
  • Scoliosis
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease

It also helps to alleviate:

  • Stress and tension
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Balance and coordination problems
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Learning disabilities and ADD/ADHD
  • Irritable bowel syndrome

It also helps release physical and emotional holding patterns caused by trauma. Once these holding patterns are released, the body is able to repair itself and bring balance back to areas that are affected.

What can I expect during a session?
A typical session is 1 hour. You will lie on a massage table fully dressed, wearing loose and comfortable clothing. The therapist will place their hands on your body with a light touch, assessing and treating for restrictions in tissues and muscle and bone movement. After your session, you should feel deeply relaxed and rejuvenated. Most people feel better after 1 to 3 sessions. Craniosacral therapy can be used alone or in conjunction with chiropractic, massage, acupuncture or counseling therapies. It can be helpful for both children and adults.
